Good afternoon MCPS families and staff,
House Bill 1455 has been passed by the House and the Senate and is awaiting action from the Governor by April 13, 2026. If approved the law will allow schools to begin 14 days before September 1 (instead of Labor Day) of each year.

For the 2026-2027 school year, this allows our school division to start school on August 18, the same date we started this year, and end before Memorial Day.

MCPS has drafted a revised calendar for the community's consideration.

Calendars developed are in compliance with the Code of Virginia.

We are asking feedback from the community on this revised calendar. Please access the link below to provide your feedback, which is due by Friday, March 26.

MCPS will be closed for students and staff Monday, March 16. This is due to the high confidence from the National Weather Service of severe, damaging, widespread storms that will be in our area. This includes the possibility of tornadoes. Please pay attention to all weather alerts tomorrow and take all necessary safety precautions.

Learning comes to life in so many ways across our schools! 📚✨

Seventh grade math students recently used graham crackers to explore rectangular prisms and discover different dimensions—proving that hands-on learning can be both engaging and delicious! 🍪📐

At the March School Board Meeting, 5th-grade students Liam Briggs, Maddyn O’Leary, Avery Dobyns, Carson Spurlock, and Londyn Jones proudly shared their incredible hands-on science experiences under the guidance of Mrs. Boucher. 🧬 Their presentation highlighted how community partnerships enrich student learning—from exploring local history at the Timberneck House with the Fairfield Foundation, to studying marine ecology with the Virginia Institute of Marine Science and the Friends of the Rappahannock (through the Urbanna Oyster Festival Foundation), and investigating engineering concepts with the Hampton Roads Sanitation District. 🌊🦪💧

We are so proud of these students for presenting their work with such confidence and passion while showcasing the power of collaboration and community partnerships! 🌟👏

MES Second-grade students are transforming abstract concepts into hands-on discoveries by using number cards to master place value! 🔢 By physically arranging digits to build two- and three-digit numbers, students can see exactly how the position of a "5" changes its worth from five ones to fifty or even five hundred. 🏗️ Using number cards, this exploration naturally leads into comparing numbers, where students use their understanding of the hundreds, tens, and ones places to determine which values are greater than or less than others. ⚖️ It is wonderful experience to realize how much power a single digit can have! 💡
